Pool inspections in Kedron, done properly
Kedron and the streets running off Gympie Road are post-war Brisbane at its most practical. Solid brick and tile homes, some raised Queenslanders, and the thing that defines them for our purposes: genuinely generous flat backyards. The pool sits in the middle of a real yard rather than squeezed against a boundary, which removes a whole class of problems and creates a different one.
When there is room around a pool, that room gets used. A garden shed goes up near the fence. A rainwater tank goes in beside it. The wheelie bins live down that side. A woodpile accumulates. A trailer gets parked there. None of it was put there with the pool fence in mind, and any of it within 900 mm of the outside of the barrier is a climbing aid as far as the standard is concerned.
The second Kedron pattern is fence age. Plenty of pools here were fenced in the eighties and nineties with tubular steel or, on the older ones, chainmesh. Tubular fencing generally holds up well. Chainmesh does not: it stretches, sags at the base, and the diamond aperture on older mesh is frequently wide enough to fail on its own. If your pool still has its original chainmesh fence, it is worth knowing where you stand before you list the property.

What usually needs attention on a Kedron pool
Every pool is different, but the same handful of things come up again and again around Kedron.
Sheds, tanks and bins near the fence
The classic Kedron finding. A garden shed, rainwater tank, wheelie bin or woodpile inside the 900 mm non-climbable zone. Almost always fixable by moving it.
Original chainmesh fencing
Older mesh sags at the base, stretches at the corners, and often has an aperture wide enough to give a foothold. Frequently the item that decides whether a fence gets repaired or replaced.
Mature trees with low branches
Established backyards mean established trees. A limb within the non-climbable zone or overhanging the barrier is a fail, and usually a pruning job.
Gates propped open for mowing
A gate that gets wedged open on mowing day and stays that way. We assess it as found, and a gate that cannot self-close because something is holding it does not pass.
Pool pumps and filters at the fence line
On a big yard the plant tends to get tucked against the fence out of sight. Out of sight is often inside the zone.
None of these mean an automatic fail. Most are small, many are fixed on the day, and you will always get a plain explanation of what we found and why it matters.

Gaps & spacing
No gaps a small child could get through, including under the fence and between verticals.

The gate self-closes and self-latches from any position, with the latch out of a child's reach.
Non-climbable zone
Nothing climbable, like pots, taps, trees or furniture, within the 900 mm zone outside the fence.
Doors & windows
Any windows or doors opening to the pool area meet the barrier requirements.

A current, compliant CPR sign is displayed near the pool.

- My pool has the original chainmesh fence. Will it pass? Sometimes, but chainmesh is the fence type we most often find non-compliant. Sagging at the base and a wide mesh aperture are the usual reasons. It is worth having assessed before you commit to a sale date so you know whether you are looking at a repair or a replacement.
- Does my garden shed really matter? If it is within 900 mm of the outside of the pool barrier, yes. Anything climbable in that zone is treated the same way, whether it is a shed, a tank, a bin or a stack of firewood.
- Can you inspect a tenanted property without me there? Yes, as long as we have safe access to the pool area and the tenant is aware. Plenty of our Kedron work is for landlords and agents, and we can send the certificate straight through.
- How quickly can you get to Kedron? About fifteen minutes from Newstead. Same-day is normal for Kedron, Wooloowin and Gordon Park.
